Many times you find yourself at the end of the month sitting at the dinning table with a pile of bills asking where all the money has gone. But by following just a few simple tips, you can find yourself at the end of the month with a surplus of cash.
It’s really not that difficult, and you might be surprised at just how much money you spend, and how much money you can actually save, by sticking to some of these basic money saving tips.
Pack your lunch
Picking up coffee and a bagel on your way to work every morning over the course of a month can add up. Now add to that the money you spend on your lunch every day over the course of a month. Wow!
It’s time to invest in a toaster if you don’t have one and start toasting your bagels and brewing your coffee at home. Making your lunch the night before and brown-baggin-it isn’t such a tedious task once you consider how much money you are going to have at the end of every month. It’s going take some time for the adjustment, but when you see the surplus in your checking account, you won’t care about the brown bag anymore.
Son, get me the scissors
Remember how embarrassed you used to get every time your mom would take out out her box of coupons complete with index at the grocery store? Billy’s mom never used coupons. (Yeah, and Billy never went to college either.) But maybe Billy could have gone to college had his mother saved a little money on the groceries.
You went to college, and now you have a Billy of your own. So get those scissors and start clipping coupons. One way of motivating yourself is to write yourself a check every time you go grocery shopping for the amount you saved. At the end of the month, deposit the checks and see just how much money you saved.
Do you really need the designer clothes?
It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of shopping at an exclusive store when you have thousands of dollars backing you from your Platinum card. But do you really want to pay interest on your clothes well after the excitement of wearing a designer blouse has worn off? Probably not.
Instead, you can save money, lots of it, by shopping at outlet stores and reduced retail shops. The prices are low enough that you don’t have to use a credit card to buy your clothes. Think of all the money in interest you can save over the course of year. Use the money you save to pay off your credit cards. Now that, is smart.
Just Four Degrees
Energy is something that you have to pay for every month to survive and live comfortably. But just how much are you willing to pay for your comfort is not beyond your control.
Did you know that you can save as much as 40% in energy costs just by lowering your thermostat four degrees in winter, or raising it four degrees in summer? It’s true.
Another thing you can do to save on energy costs is to make sure that your house is well-insulated. Having an open window, or leaving a door open while running the air-conditioner or furnace is throwing your money away. The idea is to save money, so insulate your home, and think: “Just four degrees? I can live with that.”
Can’t live with them, can’t live without them. Consider shopping around for a credit card with lower interest rates. Example. If you have a credit card balance with an 18% interest rate , try to find a card that has a 9% rate. This will lower your monthly payment dramatically and you may also be able to pay your credit card in less time.
If you can’t seem to help yourself, the best thing to do is to leave your credit cards at home. Also, your bank may offer a checkcard. This is a card with a Visa logo that can be used like a credit card, but doesn’t accrue interest charges. The bank doesn’t usually charge a maintenance fee to have one.
