London: Flesh and Buns – caterina foods

Flesh and Buns has to be one of the only places I have returned to more than once. New to London can make you hesitant about whats going to impress you, with so many options to try and opinions differ quite a bit compared to NZ.

If you want a fun atmosphere with sharing plates this is the place to go. instead of choosing the baos based on fillings, its more of a DIY. Choose your “Flesh” – pork, steak, salmon, etc all amazingly cooked with a burst of flavour and served on the side a small bowl of lettuce and shaved cucumber. Fatten or skinny your bun as your choose, the buns are soft like pillows and served warm in bamboo steamers.

If you’re not hungry enough for buns, opt for the delicious tapas. The ceviche is fresh and vibrant, although I am quite bias when it comes to salmon. The dish i would recommend for everyone to order is Korean fried rice. Its served in a sizzling hot pot, and your waiter will mix it at your table, where it gains this amazing crunchy bottom or top I should say. For my birthday I treated myself to the smores for dessert – maybe not quite Japanese, but great idea. If you’re not afraid to get messy then its a little fun.

Overall I can’t complain about the food, I just think the service could use some enthusiasm. It would be nice if they could crack a smile. Its a shame the staff are a bit arrogant, because the food and the bustling atmosphere really makes up for great evening.

#London Bloggers Supper Club: Beer and Buns – caterina foods

We have started our very own #London Bloggers Supper Club. Our first supper club was at pop up venue Beer and Buns. This is place for fun, creativity, foosball tables, buns and wings! With chalk boards covering the walls with free chalk on offer to draw your hearts freedom, its a great venue for a casual quick bite.

The menu is short and sweet which leaves no room for hiding. We came on a tuesday and they do a 2 for 1 deal, so highly recommend beer and buns for a cheap eat. We ordered 2 of every bun and a mixture of the wings to share between the 4 of us. We all agreed that the aubergine bun didn’t quite live up to the flavour profiles stated on the menu. However you can’t go wrong ordering the three other buns. We all agreed that it was good to see that the accompaniments in the buns were all different. The buns themselves are soft like a pillow. To be honest though their chicken wings are amazing. Perfectly deep fried and coated in three deliciously moorish coatings. We went back for seconds of the soy garlic wings.

If you want a fun, casual eatery, Beer and Buns is your go to place. They may only open till July so get in there quick!

London: Flotsam & Jetsam – caterina foods

Flotsam and Jetsam is a brand new antipodean style cafe in Wandsworth. If you are looking for all day brunch this is the place you want to eat at. This cafe is owned and ran by a kiwi family, bringing you both home made counter food and treats from crosstown doughnuts, or a menu of brunch items which can change on a daily basis. The cafe is busy and the staff are still finding their feet so give them some slack.

Its fair to say that the smashed avocado is the popular menu item, with three of us ordering it. However I swapped my poached egg for roasted mushrooms. The portion size won’t leave you feeling hungry. Perfectly seasoned and the pickled chilli, lime and mint just gives lifts the flavours. The rest of the menu was quite egg orientated but there are a great selection of sides to opt for. If you tend to choose Eggs Benedict, then F&J will spoil you with a coffee hollandaise sauce, – something I have yet to come across.

The interior is chic, warm and trendy. It was a great first impression, and there is a lot of potential for the near future. If you are kiwi missing home, this cafe will give you your home comfort that you are seeking.

London: Bukowski – caterina foods

Bukowski Grill is found in Shoreditch and Brixton offering up charcoal grilled burgers! New to London, we are discovering where to find somewhere that offers originality and a product thats great value for money. We came across box park in Shoreditch, where all the eateries and stalls are in shipping containers.

We actually chose to eat here because the smell coming from the kitchen was just alluring. The menu isn’t long, which tbh is a good thing because it means what they produce should be made really well with little faults. Because I only eat free-range chicken I went with the chicken burger, as I found its rare to find free-range chicken on the places I have visited so far in London. If you order a beef burger, they ask how you want it cooked! MR is the way to go and all served on brioche buns.

If you are a feign for hot chips – these are the ones you want to try. Thrice cooked chips! They were amazing. I have nothing to fault with them. They were so cripsy on the outside and fluffy and soft on the inside, and chunky. – Dream fries right there. Bukowski all serve free homemade condiments which actually makes a difference to eating your generic bottled sauces. The service was efficient and quick, but it was a week night and quite quiet, so can’t guarantee the same service on the weekend. I highly recommend Bukowski if your craving that burger and fries that won’t disappoint.
