McLaren 650S Le Mans talks of the F1 GTR – giles automotive

McLaren have introduced a new version of the 650S called Le Mans. This is a vehicle that comes with the spirit of celebration and appearance.

It has come about in order to celebrate 20 years since their incredible McLaren F1 GTR managed to win the 24 hour of Le Mans endurance race.

We’re not sure the 650S is capable of a similar feat but the appearance level they’ve managed to reproduce pretty well. In terms of performance changes are non-existent.

A 3.8 liter V8 teamed with a couple of turbochargers lies under its bonnet. This is where 650 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque are being produced.

The same brilliant suspension system is employed, the same transmission, the same interior, the same equipment and there’s nothing in terms of options available for the exterior.

Essentially, you have to have the heritage looking model. This is where the aerodynamics goes that little bit crazy and where a roof mounted air intake turns up.

“Have to have” is actually not the right way to present the situation. The reason you “want to have” the 650S Le Mans is because of the way it looks.

While it is related to the company that made the winning car back then and while the exterior is painted in a color called Sarthe Grey, it’s not a Le Mans vehicle.

It is something to show off but it’s still a great car to enjoy because the 650S is a car of blistering performance. It can still get you to 62 in 3 seconds.

At the top end you might not hit 207 any more, but you’ll still be north of 200 hp and having the huge wheels inspired by the F1 GTR will make you forget about that stuff.

2015 Ford Mustang attacks European markets – giles automotive

Ford has always been a brand of the people. It still is, and it’s about to become a brand of the fun loving people. This is because they’ve launched the new Mustang in Europe.

Excluding the UK, various markets of the old continent have actually had the opportunity to purchase the iconic muscle car before.

What has changed with the 2015 model is the fact that it’s now available with an engine that’s more accustomed to the conditions.

The engine lineup now includes a turbocharged 2.3 liter, four cylinder, EcoBoost engine. Blasphemy it may be, but slow it definitely isn’t.

Developing 310 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque, the four pot can properly light up the rear wheels when called upon. In its most basic form, teamed with a six speed manual gearbox you can get to 60 in 5.5 seconds.

Enjoying the speed is one thing, but knowing the tax level and fuel economy of the V6 is no longer a worry should make the good looking Mustang a possibility for more and more people.

Since it starts at just under 29.000 GBP in Britain and some 35000 euro in the other markets, it’s good value for money, as Ford models have always been.

Oh and the British should be as happy as it gets for one big reason, for the first time in history, the pony car is available with right hand drive.

You can still get the big V8 engine if you want to get the full experience but more interesting options may be the automatic gearbox or a convertible body.

Naturally, there’s a wide variety of interior, technology or exterior options so you can customize your 2015 Ford Mustang to whatever taste you wish.

Subaru WRX STI racer coming to Nurburgring 24 – giles automotive

Subaru is a Japanese company that’s very well known for its motor sport efforts, especially in terms of rallying. As far as more conventional racing is concerned things aren’t the same.

That may just change since it seems they’re interested in taking to the tarmac and sticking to it. Mind you, they don’t plan to change the car very soon.

The Japanese car maker has announced that it plans to give the WRX STI a proper shakedown at the 2015 Nurburging 24 hour endurance race.

That event is scheduled to take place in some traction friendly conditions, between May 14 and 17. The new Subaru WRX STI racer was already showcased last week.

For some reason it has been one of the oversights of the major media draw at the Tokyo Motor Show and we’re very sorry about that.

It’s just the incredible way this vehicle looks that should be enough to make it easily acknowledged. Regardless, the news of what Subaru has in mind for it is even better.

SP3T is the class where this new racing version of the WRX STI is headed, which is a good thing. It’s actually one of the places where the constellation brand already has some expertise.

They actually won the event twice before so the odds are well stacked in their favor. On a side note, its smaller brother the BRZ GT300 was also unveiled in Tokyo.

That’s headed for the SuperGT championship so we’re not likely to see much of it anyway.

Good luck to Subaru on their endeavor and I do believe that if conditions at the Ring were to get tricky, their drivers should have experience in slippery conditions

Hyundai Veloster Turbo gets a facelift – giles automotive

South Korea is a small country with big feats. Given the range of improvements they’ve been making in the automotive industry, they will have their mark on the map.

While my analyst status is yet to be established, I reckon there’s quite the set of hints pointing at Korea eventually being where Japan was less than 20 years ago.

Getting back to Korea, it’s time to talk about the Hyundai Veloster Turbo. This impressively hot hatchback is getting a facelift.

This vehicle is receiving a major change in regard to its drivetrain. The 1.6 liter turbocharged GDI engine still develops 204 horsepower or 186 in European guise.

While the power is still the same, there’s a crucial difference very close to it. The current six speed gearbox is being replaced by a brand new seven speed dual clutch unit.

Some other bits and pieces will be changed alongside, just so the new car looks, and perhaps feels, slightly different from the one it replaces.

No matter what alterations to the grille, interior materials, alloys, headlights and fog lights, they don’t make up the most important change here.

That new gearbox, the addition of a sound equalizer and the fact that is says new on the box is all you need to know.

While we can gloss over the fake engine noise, we should be excited about the new technology that is available in a somewhat affordable model.

It was not some five years ago that this sort of witchcraft was available on high end luxury cars or on super fast sports cars. Ending on a not so cheery note, Hyundai is yet to confirm the exporting of this vehicle or simply making it to treat their own employees.
